First Day of School

I slowly opened the door to my sons' room. The light was diffused first by the mini-blinds and then by buzz lightyear green curtains but still my oldest son's face was illuminated by rogue shafts of light. I looked to the left, where his younger brother slept in the shadow of the wall, untouched by the light through the window. He still had a year to go and was deep in sleep, still chasing the rabbits in his dreams. Jonathan stirred at my entrance and was throwing off his blanket as I knelt next to his bed. Before I could say "good morning" or "I love you", his face widened with a smile as he declared,

"First day of school, here I come!"
